A memorial to a black Civil War hero who died to save the Wrightsville bridge?

→ Our take: A memorial to a black Civil War hero – The York Daily Record

As part of a volunteer company that was tasked with halting the Confederate advance on Lancaster County, the unknown black soldier was decapitated by artillery fire on June 28th, 1863. He was the only casualty during the battle of Wrightsville, which culminated with Col. Jacob Frick ordering the mile long covered bridge to be burned. The monument will be located in Wrightsville’s Mount Pisgah Cemetery.
