As it flows through Pennsylvania’s Lancaster and York Counties to the Chesapeake Bay, the Susquehanna River has long been a gateway to exploration and a corridor of culture and commerce. As rich in history as it is in breathtaking scenery, spectacular wildlife and soul restoring recreation, the river is a place for experiencing the stories of America. From the earliest Native Americans, to the American Revolution, to the Civil War, to the Industrial Revolution, so much of America’s heritage can be traced to this waterway.

Today, visitors to the Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Area can explore this history while experiencing the hospitality of our river communities and the excitement of outdoor adventures.
