Columbia’s first Albatwitch Festival remembers the apple-snatching creature of local lore

→ Little Bigfoot: Columbia’s first Albatwitch Festival remembers the apple-snatching creature of local lore – LancasterOnline

This is a brilliant idea for a festival and certainly a welcome addition to the areas annual events. I have come across the Albatwitch legend during the course of my research for this site and am intrigued with the idea of a mini-Bigfoot lurking on the fringes of Columbia, as well as the fringes of our collective unconscious.

Although the classical conception of Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, is synonymous with the Pacific Northwest and Northern California in the popular culture, many regional variations on the theme occur across the United States, so it is not surprising that Pennsylvania Dutch Country should have one too. The Susquehannocks would have had contact with such a creature, as would have the early settlers who populated what was, at the time, the western frontier of colonial America.

The festival will feature live music, numerous lectures and an apple themed food profile as well as chance to take part in a “Ghosts of Columbia” walking tour. Read the article for all the details on first annual Albatwitch Festival and check out the official website as well. Who knows? You might walk away a believer.
