As American as Shoofly Pie: The Foodlore and Fakelore of Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine by William Woys Weaver on Amazon.com

As American as Shoofly Pie: The Foodlore and Fakelore of Pennsylvania Dutch Cuisine by William Woys WeaverThis book blew me away. Rich in food history as well as Pennsylvania Dutch cultural history it’s well written and held my attention with a plethora of details about the foodways and folkways of life as it was in the Deitscherei. This is a book I will read again and refer to often.

Just one caveat: There are recipes in the back pages but it is not a “recipe book”, but rather a history book with recipes that reflect the content of each chapter. I highly recommend this book.
