According to Pennsylvania Deitsch folk lore, if you’ve got a black walnut tree that refuses to start bearing it’s green, ball-like fruit, the best thing to do is to beat it with a baseball bat – or some other similar implement. This is supposed to traumatize the tree and force it into bearing as it should! But you can’t do this on any old day. No, there is one special day when the tree is to receive it’s beating.
