Graveyards of southeastern and central Pennsylvania are home to some of the most elaborate tombstones in the United States, even rivaling the baroque masterpieces of New England cemeteries. But why do some of Pennsylvania’s most elaborately carved grave markers show no indication of ever bearing any text, and appear, for all practical purposes, to be blank??
