Pennsylvania’s real hex magic

→ Pennsylvania’s real hex magic – The York Daily Record

Along with the government’s efforts – via the school system – to eradicate the use of Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch dialect there was also a campaign undertaken by the medical community, in collusion with the PA state government, to demonize and eradicate the folk medicine practiced by the Braucherai. The infamous 1928 Hex Murder, and the sensationalized media coverage that followed it, went a long way towards helping drive the art of Powwowing and its practitioners underground.

Its exciting to know that this traditional is still around and that it may be experiencing a revival. In addition to being an effective healing technique for some people, it is also an important aspect of authentic Pennsylvania Dutch Culture that should be studied and disseminated to the wider culture at large as a way to preserve the folkways of the Deitscherei.

Powwow practitioner Silver Raven Wolf will present a seminar on healing and empowerment which will include powwow and other forms of traditional healing, 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at New Vision Books & Gifts, 2594 Eastern Blvd. Call 717-843-8067 for more information.
