Amish Schoolhouse - Lancaster County, PA

I took this photo in Lancaster County and didn’t realize it was a schoolhouse until weeks later when I was editing images from that day. I remember thinking how odd it was for there to be this little fenced in building in the middle a large farmer’s field. The looming structures of the high power lines also caught my eye.

As I looked at the image I realized there was a little bell tower on the roof; then I saw the stove pipe and the outhouses and that’s when I realized what it was. I zoomed in on the entrance to the lot on the right side and there was a push bike, another giveaway that it was in fact an Amish or possibly Old Order Mennonite schoolhouse. The irony of the massive electrical line running almost directly overhead structure made me laugh. An apt metaphor for the old school Anabaptist’s bold approach to cultural preservation if there ever was one.
