In the Pennsylfaanisch Deitsch dialect this popular dish is known as hinkelbottboi.
Susan Donecker of York, Pa., got this recipe from her grandmother Effie Meyers, of German descent, who got it from her mother. “She and my grandfather lived very close to us on the farm,” writes Donecker in an e-mail. “She often had our meals prepared when we came in from the field or returned home from market.” In the Pennsylvania Dutch areas of York and Lancaster counties, she says, churches and firehouses make pot pie dinners for fund-raisers.
