The U.S. Army Heritage Trail in Carlisle is a free, outside attraction. It’s a great place to take children, with many structures and objects to explore and plenty of open space along its one mile course. There is a lot of interesting signage at each the nineteen stops along the trail for those who want to learn more, and even if your not into military history – or history at all – there’s a good chance you’ll still find something to like. On the outside chance that you don’t, all you’ve spent is time!
The only downside here is that at some points along the trail you will be in very close proximity to Interstate 81 and the noise can become an issue if you prefer quiet environments. These noisy areas make up a relatively small percentage of the trails footprint, so in general this does not take away from the experience as whole. Give yourself at least one hour to walk the trail. I spent an hour and half taking photographs with my daughter and easily could have spent another hour exploring the grounds.
The Army Heritage Trail is open for visitation dawn to dusk daily. The buildings and structures on the trail are open during normal hours of operation: Monday – Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday, 12 noon to 5 pm.
